Andra Ursuța

(B. 1979)

BIO

Born in Salonta, Romania, Andra Ursuța left for the United States in 1997, moving to New York in 1999. Ursuţa's uniquely innovative, wry and often absurd sculptures and installations transform memory, fear, and cultural inheritance into viscerally evocative forms. Drawing from art history, popular culture, and personal experience, she mixes media such as cement, plaster, marble, wood, and found objects to explore mortality, absence and the uncanny.

Half-Drunk Mummy forms part of a series of cast-glass sculptures building upon the body of work the artist debuted at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. To create these figures, Ursuța collages found objects in her studio, including discarded packaging or clothing to construct sculptural combines. These assemblages are 3D printed before being cast in translucent glass. Haunting and poetic, these abstracted figures appeal to our imagination and emotion, transcending conceptions of past, present and future.
