Martha Jungwirth

(B. 1940)

BIO

Austrian artist Martha Jungwirth's highly personal painting style is characterized by an intuitive approach to creation. Contrasting the rational principles of Conceptualism, Jungwirth’s pictorial space, grounded in her touch and bodily energy, is closer to Informal art. Her “constellations of blotches,” often in visceral reds, yellows and violets, carefully balance an ingenious interplay of chance and intention, without overwhelming the canvas. In her explorations, she draws on personal encounters, political events or art historical references. In the series Neither more nor less, she takes inspiration from Goya’s satirical etching Ni más ni menos (1796–97), depicting a monkey as court painter and a donkey as the painted aristocrat.
